RealStar® AHFV / KFDV RT-PCR Kit 1.0 now available

Kyasanur forest disease (KFD) is a tick-borne viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to South India. The disease is caused by the Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV) belonging to the family Flaviviridae, which is transmitted by monkeys.

Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever (AHF) is caused by the Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (AHFV), a tick-borne virus of the Flavivirus family. The Alkurma hemorrhagic fever virus (AHFV) shares a common ancestor with the Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV) and is endemic in Saudi Arabia. Camels and sheep have been linked to be the natural hosts of this virus.

Both AHFV and KFDV are similar to other hemorrhagic fever diseases like Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) or the Rift Valley fever (RVF), so a differentiation at an early state is necessary. The real-time RT-PCR technology is more sensitiv compared to serological testing and therefore preferable because the virus RNA can be detected even at early stages of disease. This may help to avoid outbreaks.

The kit contains ready-to-use RT-PCR components (RUO) and is developed for parallel testing with, but not exclusively, the RealStar® Dengue RT-PCR Kit 3.0, RealStar® Rift Valley Fever Virus RT-PCR Kit 1.0 and RealStar® Yellow Fever Virus RT-PCR Kit 1.0.
