Now available: CE-IVD marked AltoStar® HIV RT-PCR test

altona Diagnostics has launched the AltoStar® HIV RT-PCR Kit 1.5, an in vitro diagnostic test based on real-time RT-PCR technology. The kit detects and quantifies the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) specific RNA (groups M, N and O) in human EDTA plasma. It is designed for use with the AltoStar® Molecular Diagnostic Workflow, which offers enhanced flexibility in sample-to-PCR management.

“With this CE-IVD RT-PCR test for the monitoring of HIV-1 we complete our AltoStar® blood borne virus product portfolio,” says Dr. Markus Hess, General Manager of altona Diagnostics. “The broad AltoStar® assay menu now includes test systems for reliable viral load monitoring of blood borne viruses like HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Virus.”

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) belongs to the genus Lentivirus, which is a subgroup within the family of Retroviridae. Of the two species of HIV described – HIV type 1 (HIV-1) and HIV type 2 (HIV-2) – HIV-1 is the most common. Designed as a dual target assay, the AltoStar® HIV RT-PCR Kit 1.5 allows amplification of separate regions of the HIV-1 genome to monitor HIV infected patients.
