altona Diagnostics and University Hospital Essen support Ukrainian hospital

To improve the diagnosis of infectious diseases, the Institute for Virology and the Institute of Medical Microbiology of the University Hospital Essen are collaborating with Poltava State Medical University in Ukraine in education and research since August 2022. Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis or HIV as well as infections with multi-resistant bacteria are a major problem in war-torn Ukraine.

altona Diagnostics was approached by our customer University Hospital Essen and gladly accepted to be a supplier within the Hospital Partnership program emergency measures. We provide two AltoStar® automation systems complete with tool kits and have additionally trained Ukrainian laboratory and technical staff in Essen and in Hamburg at the altona headquarters application lab. Both AltoStar® systems have now been shipped to Ukraine and will be installed upon the arrival of the necessary tool kits.

The emergency aid campaign is being funded by the German Society for International Cooperation via the Hospital Partnerships program. A diagnostic concept is being developed for Poltava that complies with EU guidelines. Two Poltava locations will use the laboratory equipment for diagnostics and research, including the altona Diagnostics system, as well as provided supply of reagents and consumables.

One of the major challenges within the project was ensuring on-site technical support. This includes installation as well as the repair and maintenance of our equipment. Fortunately, we found a partner in the Ukrainian service company HLR. A technical maintenance training directly from altona at our premises in Hamburg and at the University Hospital in Essen was provided through our technical support team. This secures the sustainable use of the equipment in Ukraine and creates knowledge and synergetic effects for other applications and future projects in Ukraine.

Spurred by the social mandate of the task the altona staff involved went the extra mile to overcome all obstacles that came up with this exceptional situation, for example logistics and regulatory as well as safety-related aspects.
