The World Health Organization (WHO) has once again included the RealStar® Filovirus Screen RT-PCR Kit 1.0 for the detection and differentiation of Ebolavirus and Marburg virus in its Emergency Use Listing (EUL). This time for the detection of Ebola Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), reaffirming its value as a trusted diagnostic solution during public health emergencies.
This is the second time the assay has received WHO EUL. It was first listed during the 2014–2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic. With the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Central Africa, the assay has again been recognized by the WHO as a safe and effective tool for timely diagnosis and outbreak management.
The new WHO EUL provides an important level of confidence. It demonstrates that the altona assay has undergone an independent WHO assessment for its quality, safety, and performance, making it a trusted solution for use during public health emergencies. The inclusion in the WHO emergency use list facilitates procurement by governments, UN agencies, and international organizations involved in outbreak response.
This achievement reinforces our long-standing commitment to delivering reliable molecular diagnostics that perform when rapid and accurate results are of paramount importance.
The new listing comes as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to respond to an outbreak of Ebola virus disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus species. The outbreak has resulted in thousands of confirmed cases across multiple provinces, while neighboring Uganda has strengthened surveillance and preparedness activities to prevent cross-border transmission.
Unlike the Zaire ebolavirus, there are currently no licensed vaccines or virus-specific therapeutics approved for Bundibugyo virus disease, making rapid laboratory diagnosis even more essential. Early confirmation enables healthcare professionals to quickly identify infected patients, initiate supportive care, implement infection prevention and control measures, and conduct effective contact tracing.
The new WHO Emergency Use Listing reflects more than a regulatory milestone – it demonstrates the continued commitment of altona to global health preparedness.
