altona Diagnostics has recently launched the FlexStar® E. coli Pathotype 1 PCR Detection Mix 1.5 RUO as a new member for the Gastrointestinal panel. It is a reagent system, based on real-time PCR technology for the qualitative detection and differentiation of DNA specific to virulence factors of enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). The kit is for research use only (RUO).
With this new PCR product, we enable detection and differentiation of pathogenic E. coli types (Pathotypes). Our flexible and combinatory assay concept encompasses two E. coli pathotype PCR products, from which the second is coming soon. Combination of both products will allow the detection of the main E.coli pathotypes.
About the pathogens in general
The rod-shaped bacteria Escherichia coli (E.coli) are commensals of the gastrointestinal tract in warm-blooded organisms like humans. Pathogenic E. coli are usually transmitted via the fecal-oral route and affect humans all over the world causing diarrheal diseases. Though all being E.coli, the bacteria differ in site and mechanism of colonization and thus pathogenicity, associated with their set of different marker genes. The detection and differentiation of those marker genes allows an accurate identification of the different E.coli pathotypes.
