altona launches AltoStar® Treponema pallidum PCR Kit 1.5 RUO

altona Diagnostics has recently launched the AltoStar® Treponema pallidum PCR Kit 1.5 RUO as a new member of the sexually transmitted infections (STI) panel. It is a reagent system, based on real-time PCR technology, for the qualitative detection of Treponema pallidum specific DNA. The kit is for research use only (RUO).

With this new PCR product, the detection of Treponema pallidum is now also included in the AltoStar® portfolio, thereby optimizing it.

About the pathogen in general

Treponema pallidum is a Gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacterium and the etiological agent of syphilis, a chronic systemic sexually transmitted infection characterized by complex clinical manifestations that progress through distinct stages if left untreated.

Treponema pallidum is transmitted primarily through sexual contact but can also be passed congenitally or via blood transfusion. Its pathogenicity stems from its ability to evade the host immune system, leading to persistent infection and potentially severe complications affecting the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

The use of efficient real-time PCR kits for the detection of Treponema pallidum is essential for public health surveillance, particularly in light of the recent global surge in syphilis incidence.
